Book Review: Every Sunrise

Sometimes what makes a good book is the sweetness of its characters and the real issues they face. This is true of Tricia Goyer’s new book Every Sunrise, part of the Heather Creek series from Guideposts.

Every Sunrise follows the lives of the Stevenson family. Charlotte is a wife, mother, and grandmother, who finds herself caring for her three grandchildren after their mother, Denise dies. It’s a real change of pace for Sam, Emily and Christopher as they begin new lives on the family farm in Nebraska, far away from the only home they’ve ever known in California. Time has passed and it seems that everyone is settling-in but Charlotte notes Sam’s quiet withdrawal from the family.

What I loved about the main character, Charlotte, is her need to fix things. She’s always putting everyone else ahead of herself, she cooks, she prays, she tries to set the past right, while still holding on to a brighter future. Her secret heartache nibbles at her mind, but she pushes forward, trying to provide the best home she and her husband, Bob, can for three hurting children. But when Sam disappears, Charlotte must confront the ghosts of her past, in order to begin anew with the sunrise.
