During this festive season the gym is holding its annual food drive for the needy. I am so impressed with the generosity of these ladies. If only you could see the mountains of food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and baby goods that have been donated to this worthy cause. Even though the economy is tanked, even though there are ladies who have lost jobs, even though the future looks mighty bleak; they still give. It makes me all warm inside.
Except...
There are those who are literally cleaning out their cupboards and while there is nothing wrong with that, one should observe EXPIRATION DATES. As I repacked goods from bags to boxes I noticed several packets of seasoning that frankly I remember from my childhood! The pictures were old and the contents rather stiff. Ewwwww!
There were cans that expired...

Ahem.
So, a friendly word to the wise: Be generous. Give! But if you are going to clean out your cupboards do not dump your garbage on the poor, needy, and hungry. That's just wrong! Not to mention nasty!

Yikes! Who keeps food from 1987?? And then gives it away?? I'd be afraid to see what the food is like inside... *shudder*
Our boy scouts had a food drive for Thanksgiving and I noticed the same thing. Who keeps food that long? And to give it to needy people? They've got enough problems without having to eat 20 year old food!
my bet is that the donor was an older person. my aunt has a stash of cans and i am willing to bet that many of hers are way past expiration, hell i bet some are so old that they won't even have an expiration on them. she's of the depression generation and they never throw anything out.

I was reading your post on Honesty... what a sticky situation. Sometimes the truth hurts, but how hurtful could it have been without the truth. Double edged sward.
I also agree with you on the exp. dates. I worked at a woman's shelter. Like you wrote, some times I got the feeling people were not doing it for the right reason. I also looked into how to decipher some of the exp. codes. Those are not as clear as one would think. All in all, I am happy that people are making an effort.
I dont even know how to keep food in the house that long. lol I had the kids pick oit some food to give this year
